The Voortrekker Monument was inaugurated on 16 December 1949 in honour of the Voortrekkers who embarked on the Great Trek in 1836. Only once a year, at exactly 12 o'clock on the 16th of December, the sun shines through the dome of the monument onto the middle of the cenotaph and the words "Ons vir jou, Suid-Afrika" (We for Thee, South Africa).
