It was built from light sandstone in 1913, and is 275 m long and has a halve-round shape with two wings at the sides. The Voortrekker Monument is another remarkable piece of architecture. It was inaugurated on 16 December 1949 in honour of the Voortrekkers who embarked on the Great Trek in 1836. Only once a year, at exactly 12 o'clock on the 16th of December, the sun shines through the dome of the monument onto the middle of the cenotaph and the words "Ons vir jou, Suid-Afrika" (We for Thee, South Africa).
